Chelsea is a “whistleblower” who made available thousands of classified files pertaining to US war crimes / crimes against humanity and is serving a 35-year sentence for this valiant act. Shortly after her incarceration she changed her name and began transitioning to female, initially requesting treatment for her medical needs in transitioning in August of 2013.
The Department of Defense’s finally approved hormone replacement therapy in early 2015, but only after a subsequent September 2014 lawsuit filed in conjunction with the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) helped to ensure that her medical needs would no longer continue to be ignored. It has been a long road, and hormone therapy is only one component of necessary care. The military prison is still refusing to let her grow her hair like other female prisoners, a critical part of her treatment plan that has been recognized by her doctors.
Given the significant time Chelsea is sentenced to spend in military prison, please make a donation for legal advocacy for her health care needs, and sign the petition to President Obama to grant her clemency. For more information, see chelseamanning.org.
