July update on Seth Hayes: Call for support

As previously noted, Seth Hayes finally began to receive medical intervention for both his Hepatitis C and poorly-managed diabetes roughly a month ago.  This development is no doubt thanks to many people who made calls on his behalf.  Unfortunately, Seth is still suffering from undiagnosed and untreated chronic bleeding and abdominal growths.  Many calls have been made to Health Services in regards to these conditions that warrant urgent assessment, and there has been no response.  Please join in calling and faxing Health Services this week, stating that you are calling about Robert Seth Hayes, #74-A-2280, at Sullivan Correctional Facility, and requesting:

— For coughing up blood, that he be given the results of the chest Xray he was given in May, as well as a PPD (TB skin test), and (if chest Xray was unrevealing) a chest Cat scan.  Additionally, if there is any concern about heart failure from the chest Xray, that he be given an ECHO.

— For the lump on his abdomen, an abdominal ultrasound or Cat scan.  For the ones on his chest wall, a Dermatology consult where they do a biopsy if it is appropriate next step or advise Seth as to what the lesions are.

On Monday 7/6, Tuesday 7/7 and Wednesday 7/8 please call:

***Dr. Carl J. Koenigsmann, Chief Medical Officer, DOCCS Division of Health Services at (518) 457-7073

***Holly, Health Services Supervisor, at (518) 445-6176
On Thursday 7/9 and Friday 7/10, please fax (you can use a free online fax service like faxzero.com if needed):

***Dr. Carl J. Koenigsmann M.D. at Fax: (518) 445-7553

***Holly at Fax: (518) 445-6157

PA Department of Corrections is Concealing Mumia’s Medical Records

Mumia Abu-Jamal’s will to live and his commitment to telling the truth is
matched by our collective resolve to see him well and free.

Please take action again. Please know that your calls, letters, emails, and
faxes (even the ones that they hang up on or seem to ignore) are the only
reason that he was given diagnostic testing.  Mumia is still weak, in a
wheelchair, and his legs are bandaged heavily. He has *still* not been
given a diagnosis or a treatment plan. Mumia needs a plan that will address
the underlying causes of his chronic and potentially life threatening
conditions. Please know that his mind is clear, and his energy is
returning. He sends his love and his understanding- that because you took
action, he is alive.

*Mumia spent nine days Geisinger Medical Center in Danville PA, and is
now back in the infirmary at SCI Mahanoy. Our actions today will ensure
that Mumia receives the urgent diagnosis and medical treatment. *

In the latest outrage, the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections is
refusing to release Mumia’s medical records. Their excuse- that Bret Grote
from the Abolitionist Law Center and co-counsel Bob Boyle went to federal
court to demand that his lawyers and family be allowed to advise and
see him while he was hospitalized. Holding Mumia’s medical records is
simply retaliation for exercising his constitutional right to access to the
courts.

And It is a direct attack on his ability to get expert advice and care.
They are preventing Mumia and his doctor from seeing these critical
records, at a time when his condition, while stable, remains serious.

Act Now.

*Call the Prison, the Governor, and the DOC*. Demand that they release
Mumia’s medical records immediately (see numbers below).

Seth Hayes’ Health Continues to Deteriorate due to Medical Neglect – Call in this week!

Seth’s medical condition continues to worsen, and he has not been evaluated or treated for potentially life-threatening symptoms despite following formal medical care request procedures within the prison.  Because the medical staff at the prison and Health Services of the Department of Correction continue to neglect his medical needs despite numerous calls from concerned medical providers and other citizens, we urge both Commissioner Annucci and Governor Cuomo to exercise oversight and see to it that Seth finally receives proper medical care.

Continue to take action for Mumia this week

The following is a statement released by: International Concerned Family and Friends of Mumia Abu-Jamal, International Action Center, Free Mumia Abu-Jamal Coalition (NYC), Campaign to Bring Mumia Home, Educators for Mumia Abu-Jamal

Mumia once again taken to hospital outside SCI Mahanoy; held incommunicado from family, attorneys and doctor.  We need to act now!

Please call the officials below to demand:

  • Unrestricted hospital visitations by Mumia’s family,
  • Demand access for his attorneys
  • Let Mumia call family, supporters and doctors
  • Stop state’s attempt to murder Mumia by medical mistreatment
  • Release Mumia from prison to be able to obtain needed health care.

Use these demands appropriately for each of these venues.  So with the hospital, we want to emphasize the access and communication issues, the first three demands.

  • Geisinger Medical Center – 570-271-6211
  • DOC Secretary John Wetzel – 717-728-2573;  ra-crpadocsecretary@pa.gov
  • PA Gov. Tom Wolf –717-787-2500; fax: 717-772-8284; governor@pa.gov

Note:  The hospital has Mumia on a “confidential” list so the operators will say they have no one named Mumia Abu-Jamal or Wesley Cook at the hospital. People should tell the operator that their call should be reported to the hospital administration and use both names.

Updated Call-in Talking Points for Mumia

On Saturday May 2nd, Pam Africa and Abdul Jon visited Mumia Abu-Jamal at SCI Mahanoy. He was weak, stable, and alert.  The visit ended so that he could get rest.  Mumia is still in the infirmary.  He has been able to call his wife Wadiya Jamal.  After being denied a visit on Monday, (the prison is closed for any visits on Tues & Wed) on Thursday, Mumia’s Attorney Bret Grote Abolitionist Law Center met with Mumia for 3.5 hrs. This was in the immediate wake of Grote having submitted an expert medical recommendation letter to the Dept. of Corrections. This letter from Mumia’s doctor outlined the need for Mumia to undergo immediate and thorough diagnostic tests in search for the cause of his persistent and recently life-threatening conditions. Conditions which the prison has allowed to become nearly lethal.

On Friday, prison medical staff informed Mumia that they were going to proceed with the first diagnostic test recommended in the expert medical letter. This skin biopsy occurred Monday. Oversight and close monitoring of these tests is crucial.  The prison is preventing Mumia and Mumia’s doctors from adequate oversight and input. Because communication is being limited by prison officials Mumia does not have access quickly enough to information he needs to advocate for his own care.   We are clear that inadequate testing, delays, and any deviation from the medically necessary course of treatment, will be challenged by Grote’s legal team, whom are prepared to act.

*Obtaining a diagnosis is of paramount importance at this moment.*

Mumia remains seriously ill. Public pressure has been key every step of the way, and remains extremely important.  Please keep up the calls, emails and faxes. Demand that:
(1) Adequate diagnostic testing be done
(2) That Mumia’s doctor is able to communicate freely and regularly with the prison infirmary physicians who are delivering Mumia’s medical care
(3) His doctor has meaningful and regular phone access with Mumia. (There are no phones in the infirmary, his calls are limited to 15 mins and and he has limited access to the day room where the phones are).
(4) And allow Mumia’s chosen doctor to conduct an onsite medical examination.

Call, write, fax continue to keep the pressure on demand freedom & medical care for Mumia:

John Wetzel, PA Secretary of Corrections: 717-728-4109
Governor Tom Wolf: 717-787-2500
SCI Mahanoy: 570-787-2500

Seth Hayes’ Health Deteriorates -> Call & Fax this week

Since the latest campaign for Seth began last week, his medical situation has actually worsened. He has had a cough for over a week with shortness of breath. He is also intermittently coughing up blood tinged mucous. He has not been evaluated or treated for these symptoms.

We must keep the pressure on and be consistent, insistent and persistent to make sure we do not lose yet another of our beloved freedom fighters due to deliberate medical neglect.

Call & Fax in for Robert Seth Hayes: April 27-30

r_s_hayes2005Robert Seth Hayes is one of the longest held political prisoners in the US. He is 66 years old and suffers from multiple chronic and concerning medical problems. As many of you know, we recently waged a medical campaign for him a few months ago regarding rapid and concerning weight loss as well as poorly controlled diabetes. Neither of these concerns have been addressed to date. NYS DOCCS states on its website that denial of adequate medical care is a violation of a person’s eighth amendment constitutional rights, so please help demand that Seth be provided with proper care.
